NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 24- The National Transport and Safety Authority has called on motorists to exercise extra caution while on roads even as thousands of pupils resume school for first term.
Motorists driving within the school zones have been advised to slow down and be on the look out for children crossing.
This includes boda boda riders whose speed in school zones has been capped at 30 kph.
“The back to school season in the previous years has recorded violations leading to both fatal and serious injuries among school going children and it’s the responsibility of motorists to prevent these unfortunate incidents,” it stated.
A statement from the Authority on Monday also indicated that its the responsibility of the school management and Public Service Vehicle operators to ensure that drivers carrying children are qualified and with valid badges.
Parents have been asked to ensure that their children use safe modes of transport while taking them to and from school, by using only compliant and roadworthy means.
Incase of an incident, parents and guardians have been urged to use the NTSA mobile up to capture registration details of the vehicle used, including the registered name, Sacco or institution, it’s inspection status, licensed route and the validity of the road service license.
