NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 14 – Kenya and Denmark have inked an Implementing Partner Agreement on Maritime Cooperation in move to combat maritime threats.
The agreement, signed on Tuesday at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Aden Duale, and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark in Kenya, Stephen Schonemann, marks a strategic alliance between the two nations.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has disclosed that the agreement will run between 2024 and 2026.
“The [agreement] shall enable the two countries to partner in combating maritime threats, among them piracy, terrorism, and violent extremism,” KDF said.
Expressing gratitude for Denmark’s support to Kenya’s military, CS Duale highlighted Denmark’s role in training and educational programs at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC), through the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS) in Embakasi.
He also acknowledged, Denmark’s assistance in various initiatives and outreaches led by the East African Standby Force (EASF).
CS Duale emphasized Kenya’s commitment to enhancing maritime security through investments in critical infrastructure.
He underscored the importance of a secure maritime environment not only for Kenya but also for neighboring countries reliant on Kenya’s seaport for trade and commerce.
During discussions, CS Duale and Ambassador Schonemann explored potential future collaborations, including cyber security, recognizing the mutual benefits such initiatives would offer to the citizens of both nations.
Present in the event was Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Francis Ogolla, Principal Secretary for Defence Patrick Mariru and Vice Chief of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General Jonah Mwangi.
Others present include, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics (ACDF P &L) Major General David Keter among other senior military officers from the two countries were present during the signing ceremony.
