NAIROBI, Kenya, July 30 – Senate Deputy Minority Leader and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, a close confidant of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, has dismissed reports claiming the opposition chief recently held talks with President William Ruto, describing them as “fake news” aimed at destabilising the opposition.
In a statement on Thursday, Wambua said Kalonzo had not met the President, dismissing as fake news reports that the Wiper Leader was considering joining the broad-based government ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“For the record, my party leader has not had any such meeting with the President. The two have not had any talks whatsoever about working together in the next General Election,” Wambua said.
He accused those circulating the reports of spreading misinformation intended to destabilise the united opposition.
“It is fake news. It is deepfake. It is misinformation. It is disinformation. Those peddling these rumours are working round the clock to try and destabilise the united alternative government. They can try as much as they want, but they will fail miserably,” he told a news conference.
Wambua said he was with Kalonzo on the day the alleged meeting was said to have taken place, attending a meeting with senior editors at a Nairobi hotel before accompanying him to another meeting at his home in Karen.
“If President Ruto met a man called Kalonzo at State House or wherever, then that man was not the Wiper Party leader,” he said, in reponse to viral photos and videos of President Ruto and Kalonzo at State House.
State House has not commented on the claims.
The Kitui senator stressed that Kalonzo remains firmly committed to the opposition and is determined to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election. He said the Wiper leader is working with other leaders in the united opposition to settle on a single presidential candidate to challenge President Ruto in the August 10, 2027 polls.
Wambua added that the Wiper Patriotic Front had already endorsed Kalonzo as its sole presidential candidate during the party’s National Delegates Conference held at Uhuru Park on October 10, 2025, while authorising him to consult and work with like-minded leaders from other political parties.
He also clarified that a video circulating online showing Kalonzo with President Ruto was filmed on March 4, 2024, when Kalonzo, as co-chair of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), joined other members in presenting the committee’s report to the President.
Earlier on Thursday, Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, another close ally of Kalonzo, also dismissed speculation that the Wiper leader could join President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration. Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Maanzo said there was no engagement between Kalonzo and Ruto despite reports that sections of Kenya Kwanza were keen on bringing him into government.
“Kalonzo will not join government and he has communicated it clearly. I was with him two weeks ago and he said it clearly,” Maanzo said.
He acknowledged reports that some Kenya Kwanza legislators were pushing for Kalonzo’s inclusion in government but insisted such efforts would not succeed.
“I have seen these news articles of bids to court Kalonzo to join government. It is true Kenya Kwanza MPs have been saying that is what they want, but this will not happen,” he said.
The back-to-back statements from two of Kalonzo’s closest allies come amid heightened speculation over political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, with both insisting the former Vice President remains in the opposition and focused on his presidential bid.
