This Kikuyu EDM song is taking over the airwaves globally after going viral on TikTok.
This EDM sensation, titled ‘Mwaki,’ is the brainchild of Brazilian music producer Zerb, featuring the soulful vocals of Kenyan singer and songwriter Sofiya Nzau.
The song delves into the complex relationship between a young woman and her stern father, who had cautioned her against marrying a specific man—a warning she chose to disregard.
Translated from Kikuyu, ‘Mwaki’ means ‘Fire,’ a term often used to describe the tough and no-nonsense characteristics of a person. Sofiya’s melodic voice weaves a poignant tale with lyrics like, “Na niguo Muthee akoragwo Muaki, na nianjirite ndigakuhikie, Anyona mucii niekurakara, Nake arakara dahorekaga…. Nuuuu nuuu… No uthamire…,” which in English conveys, “My father is very strict, he warned me about marrying you. If he sees me at home, he will get angry. And when he gets angry, he’s uncontrollable… You will have to relocate!”
‘Mwaki’ has transcended language barriers, captivating tens of thousands of fans on TikTok, even those who may not comprehend Kikuyu. The EDM elements, have left listeners spellbound and passionately obsessed. Additionally, the song has garnered over 300,000 views on YouTube since its release, a week ago.
Zerb, known for his exceptional production skills, has elevated the song to unprecedented popularity on TikTok and various streaming platforms. The synergy of EDM legend Calvin Harris’ philosophy on female vocals and Sofiya Nzau’s distinctively soft-yet-throaty voice has transformed ‘Mwaki’ from a fleeting TikTok hit into something truly special.
Sofiya recently revealed on TikTok that she was born in Miruri, Murang’a and is married to a Kamba man named Nzau, who doubles as her manager and producer. Nzau’s online platform, beatsbynzau.com, showcases his prowess in producing and selling beats, some featuring Sofiya’s enchanting vocals.
‘Mwaki’ is just one of Sofiya’s EDM ventures; she also explores the Amapiano style in her quirky track ‘Kiwaru.’
