Kenyan vocalist and songwriter Sofiya Nzau, has etched her name in musical history by surpassing 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Sofiya Nzau’s ascent to global stardom is largely attributed to her international hit “Mwaki,” a collaboration with Brazilian producer Zerb. The progressive house track, sung in Kikuyu, became a worldwide dance sensation shortly after its release in November of 2023.
“Mwaki” rapidly climbed the charts, reaching No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart and inspiring hundreds of thousands of fan-created videos on social media platforms.
The song’s popularity was further fueled by a series of high-profile remixes from renowned producers including Major Lazer, Tiësto, Franky Wah, Major League DJz, Tyler ICU, and Chris Avantgarde. These remixes, along with the original track, helped “Mwaki” secure the title of the “Most Viral Song in the World” on November 16, as declared by a Spotify chart. Additionally, the track achieved an impressive fourth position on Beatport’s Afro House Top 100 chart, cementing its international acclaim.
This remarkable achievement places her among the elite ranks of African pop music, joining celebrated Afrobeat megastars like Burna Boy, Davido, Rema, and Ayra Starr.
