NAIROBI, Kenya, May 21 – Zetech Sparks have qualified for the final of the Kenya National Women’s Premier League for the first time ever after a 3-0 series sweep over former champions Equity Hawks.
The varsity girls thrashed the bankers 70-40 in Game Three to completely sweep them off, and make the final, where they will play defending champions KPA, who also swept aside Strathmore University in Game Three in Mombasa.
Zetech were in party mood after the final whistle, and their confidence showed with their iconic celebrations, having come with brooms, sweeping the floor to signify a ‘complete sweep’ over Equity in the semi-finals.
“I am really happy and excited. This is a huge achievement for the girls and the entire team. It was our second time in the semis and now we are going to play the final for the first time ever. We are beyond overjoyed,” said Maurice Obilo, the Zetech head coach.
He added; “We know we face a tough team in the final but we are going there to fight and compete. I trust in my players and I trust in their abilities.”
Obilo has also lauded the addition of national team player Madina Okot into the squad, having signed from KPA At the end of the first leg.
He says Okot has added a huge impetus to the team and filled a void in the post-player position, enabling them to improve their scoring.
Okot contributed 20 points to Zetech’s haul, but it was Chantal Kiyobae who was the chief destroyer, sinking a game high 25 points.
Coming into the game with a 2-0 series lead, and having won Game Two with a convincing margin, Zetech were high in confidence while Equity were under pressure to force the series to Game Four.
But, Zetech were in no mood to relent and Kiyobae’s hattrick of three-pointers put them sailing in the first quarter, taking an 18-13 lead at the end of it.
They continued their dominance in the second quarter, outscoring the bankers by eight points and going to the break leading 38-25.
Equity had some hope of turning the tie in their favour and outscored Zetech by three points in the third quarter. But that momentum didn’t last for long as Obilo’s charges ran rampant in the last quarter, sinking 24 points against Equity’s only four.
The bankers were careless in possession and Zetech took maximum advantage, causing turnover after turnover to ensure the clean sweep was achieved.
