And now, with Personal Protective Equipment including masks in short supply worldwide, Kenyans have rushed in to save the day with locally made gear. Reducing the downtime with imports on a go slow, locally made masks offer employment for Kenyans while keeping national businesses in operation.

This budding Kenyan designer is making a difference. In a time when the importance of fashion fails in comparison to the gravity of the novel Coronavirus, David Avido is taking matters into his own hands to produce masks for the people of Kibera. According to his Instagram, Avido has been able to distribute 5000 masks in Kibra Community for free thus far, with more plans for distribution in the works.
For his selfless act, Avido received a special recommendation by H.E President Kenyatta, being listed in the Presidential Citations Order (01062020) for Outstanding Professionals in Kenya’s response of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

2.Sandstorm Kenya
Known for their luxurious leather bags, Sandstorm has made a name for itself in the fashion industry.Under the mantra ‘Made in Kenya’, the leather goods company made a quick shift into making masks, to help provide the items when they were needed most. Stressing the importance of personal health and safety at this time, the organization is using their 20 years of experience in the business to craft face masks for the masses. Masks are available at Ksh1,060 for a pack of 4.
3. Boguk Official
Designed in Kibera, the Boguk masks offer functional yet fashionable purpose. If one was to say “personal protection but make it fashion”, Boguk has you covered. The masks go for Ksh350 per piece for adults, with varieties available for children too.
4. Sao Satorial
Sao Satorial offers a new design, something special with a positive message. According to the social media accounts, “all their masks will feature + this symbolism is to remind us to stay positive during these times. With adjustable straps, and velcro fastenings, the masks are truly unique.” Their message of hope is uplifting in a time shrouded in uncertainty.
5. Vivo Kenya
Vivo Kenya is also among the local fashion business to have shifted gears in recent weeks, to make a sustainable range of reusable masks. Among the many businesses who had to close its doors, they have now re-opened, offering their services to the public once again. However, it seems that this fashion house known for its stylish creations is making vitenge masks.
In a statement on social media, they explained “our Kitenge mask is comprised of three layers. The outer layer is made of cotton kitenge fabric. There is a middle layer of non-woven polypropylene, and a back layer of non-woven polypropylene.Our masks are breathable, washable and reusable.”
