NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 9 – The Senate National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration Committee has deferred a scheduled election to pick a new chairperson to next Wednesday after it failed to raise the requisite quorum on Tuesday.
Members of the nine-member committee were to vote for a new Chairperson after Kajiado Senator Philip Mpayeei was ousted last month in a vote of no confidence.
Five out of seven members backed the censure motion at the time.
Nominated Senator Naomi Waqo (Jubilee [Party) who is also the vice-chairperson and Kitui Senator Enock Wambua (Wiper – NASA) were touted as the front-runners to succeed Mpayeei.
KANU chairman and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi was seen as the swing vote in the poll which was shaping up as a contest between the majority Jubilee Party and the parliamentary minority National Super Alliance (NASA).
Other members of the Senate Committee include Fred Outa (Kisumu), Loitiptip Anuar (Lamu), Judith Pareno (Nominated), Christine Zawadi (Nominated) and Mercy Chebeni (Nominated).
