NAIROBI,Kenya, Jan 18-President William Ruto Thursday departed country for Uganda to attend the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) taking place in Kampala.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said in a statement that President Ruto will also attend an Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) meeting on regional cooperation and development.
“On Friday, President Ruto will attend the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement. The summit will address crucial global issues, including multilateralism, international peace and post-Covid 19 recovery strategies,” Mohamed said.
The summit which brings together Heads of States and government and heads of delegations from 120 members states, 18 observer countries and 10 observer organisations began on January 15 and will run up to January 20.
The theme of the summit is ‘Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence.’
Mohamed stated that during the forum, President Ruto will contribute to discussions ranging from reforms of the United Nations, peace and security and Sustainable Development Goals.
Other areas key areas of interest include climate change and the reform of the international financial system.
President Ruto will also hold bilateral meetings with various Heads of State and leaders aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and underscoring Kenya’s role in regional and global affairs.
The meeting comes at a time when Kenya has been caught up in diplomatic tiffs with her neighbors including Uganda and Tanzania.
On Monday, the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) had prohibited Kenya Airways (KQ) from its airspace after Kenyan authorities denied Air Tanzania cargo traffic Rights, locking it out of cargo business in the country in a move likened to tit-for-tat.
The TCAA later rescinded the decision after Kenya granted Air Tanzania the Fifth Freedom Traffic Right for all cargo services.
Uganda has sued Kenya at the East Court of Justice after Nairobi denied his East African Community (EAC) counterpart a license to handle fuel imports to Kampala.
