NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 16 –Gad Mathews put the ball in his own net at the stroke of 90 minutes as Posta Rangers come from two goals down to hold leaders Gor Mahia to a 2-2 draw in an FKF Premier League match at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
A pair of identical first half goals from Benson Omalla had seen the record champions take a 2-0 lead at the break, but Cavin Odongo stepped off the bench to inspire Posta to a point from the jaws of defeat.
He scored the first in the 61st minute, before his ferocious shot at the stroke of 90 minutes came off the post and against Mathews’ back for the leveller.
With the result, Gor Mahia’s gap between them and second placed Tusker FC is now down to two points, with the brewers having a game at hand.
Omalla however was the shining light in an otherwise disappointing afternoon for K’Ogalo.
The Kisumu Day High School alumnus netted the first of his two in the sixth minute of the game, rising to glance home a clean header from Boniface Omondi’s delivery from the left.
The same combination bore the second goal in the 29th minute, Omalla once again pocketing himself between the two central defenders to head home from Omondi’s delivery.
The goal was a painful punch for Posta, who had enjoyed a spell of dominance, pressing Gor in their own half but struggling to create any danger in the final third.
Their closest opportunity at goal during that spell was in the 23rd minute when off a counter after the keeper had saved a shot from Omondi, but Caleb Olilo could not beat the keeper from a tight angle. The other was a 17th minute Brian Marita shot that went way wide off target.
In the second half, both sides made a change to their personnel with Gor rotating their squad to give everyone rest in a busy April schedule.
But, it was Posta who were more adventurous forward and just within the opening minute, a blunder from Gor defender Paul Ochuoga with a short backpass was almost punished but Dennis Ng’ang’a bailed him out with a block to deny Timothy Otieno.
Posta however got their goal after 61 minutes when Cavin Odongo hit the back of the net barely five minutes on the pitch.
A quick counter saw Patrick Otieno lay a deep cross from the left finding Brian Marita at the backpost, the latter setting up Odongo who fired into the net from the edge of the six yard box.
The goal ignited some pressure from Posta as they forced Gor to defend deep and they had to make changes, the shaky Ochuoga coming off for Geoffrey Otieno.
Omalla would have killed off the game with 14 minutes left when he broke free on the right, but his shot was saved one on one by the keeper Kevin Opiyo.
Posta piled in pressure seeking at least a point from the contest, and it bore fruit at the stroke of 90 minutes with Odongo striking from an almost similar position he had scored from half an hour before.
