SAMBURU, Kenya, Sept 26 – Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has called on county governments to prioritize the early scheduling of major cultural and sporting events to maximize tourism benefits.
Speaking during the Maralal International Camel Derby, Miano said events remain a powerful tool to market Kenya’s diversity and attract both local and international visitors, adding that timely calendarization gives the sector ample lead time to promote destinations.
“Events such as the Camel Derby, cultural festivals, and regional showcases consistently boost visitation and spotlight the unique heritage of our counties,” she said.
Miano noted that the Maa, Lamu, and Tobongu’lore cultural festivals are gaining global traction after being placed on the national calendar of events.
She emphasized that positioning such festivals strategically enhances visibility and supports the government’s strategy of promoting Kenya as a cultural and adventure tourism hub.
Her ministry, she added, will continue collaborating with counties and private sector players to strengthen Kenya’s events tourism portfolio and ensure every region features prominently on the national calendar.
Samburu Governor Jonathan Lelelit said the Maralal Camel Derby, the only camel race of its kind in Africa, is positioning the county on the international tourism map.
“The Derby is not just a sporting spectacle; it is Samburu’s gift to the world. Beyond the thrill of the races, it symbolizes peace and unity, fostering cultural exchange and shared pride in our heritage,” he said.
