NAIROBI, Kenya, March 13 – The government is set to start redeploying former Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) staff to the civil service.
Employees seeking redeployment have been directed to start clearing with the commission beginning next week.
“Those who opted fro redeployment in the Civil Service should clear between 16th and 19th of March and those who do now opt for redeployment clear between 20th and 23rd March, 2009,” according to an advertisement in the local daily.
Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s office Titus Ndambuki has directed asked the employees to surrender all ECK belongings before clearance.
A total of 546 employees have been on compulsory leave. Employees above 53 years or those facing disciplinary cases will not be taken back.
The employees were dismissed following the adoption of the Kriegler report which called for the formation of the Interim Independent Commission of Kenya (IIEC).
IIEC has not yet been fully constituted following Parliament’s rejection of Cecil Miller who had been proposed as the chair.
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitution Review also agreed to drop the names of the Coast representative Suleiman Buko and that of Charles Masinde from Western Province.
The three had been nominated alongside Tiya Galgalo, Hamara Adan, Kenneth Nyaundi, Yusuf Nzibo, Winfred Nguchu and David Chirchir.
