NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 23 – The Uwezo Fund Oversight Board has alerted the public of con artists using a fake website and email address to defraud them.

The Fund’s Chief Executive Officer Wilfred Buyoma said the fraudsters, “led by one Lydia Ogutu who is posing as a Senior Accounts Manager,” are using www.uwezofund.org and the email address [email protected] to defraud members of the public of Sh375 for Uwezo Fund application forms.

Unsuspecting members of the public, Buyoma said, have been duped into transferring the amount via their mobile phones in the belief that they could thus access the Uwezo funds as individuals, “and they will be disbursed with the applied funds from July 15 in all the 47 counties.”

Buyoma was therefore keen to make the point that the forms can be downloaded for free from www.uwezo.go.ke and that the funds are not disbursed to individuals but to, “beneficiary groups of women, youth and persons with disability who must meet the loan’s eligibility criteria available on the official website.”

The oversight board therefore, Buyoma insisted, had nothing to do with the, “fake website, email or people,” and urged members of the public to report the fraudsters to the police or board secretariat.
