NAIROBI, Kenya, January 31, 2026 – KCB Rugby survived an early scare to down Nondies 36-14 in a Kenya Cup encounter at their Ruaraka Den backyard on Saturday evening in Nairobi.
The Red Lions roared into the lead in the first half of the encounter before Andycole Omollo crossed over the white chalk before Brian Wahinya converted to put the bankers in command.
Nondies wrestled the lead from their hosts thanks to a couple of penalties but it was only for a moment as KCB scored their second try of the game to lead 14-9 at the interval.
The bankers came back roaring on all cylinders, extending their lead to 24-9 thanks to two tries in succession.
They added two more tries midway through the encounter before Nondies responded with one of their own to reduce the scoreline to 24-14.
No joy for Quins in Kakamega
It was more or less the same script at the Kakamega Showground where Simon Ochieng’ put Kenya Harlequin in a 3-0 lead against defending champions Kabras Sugar thanks to a penalty.
However, it served to rouse the sugar millers who responded through Edward Mwaura’s try — Eric Cantona converting successfully for a 7-3 lead.
Ochieng’ proved himself a nuisance once again, scoring his second penalty to narrow the deficit to 7-6 but it was always going to be a long afternoon in the office for the capital-based side.
Patrick Sabatia then extended the hosts’ advantage with his first try before Barry Robinson got his name on the scoresheet to cement Kabras’ dominance in the duel.
Robinson picked up from where he left off in the first half, going over at the start of the second half before Collins Indeche made it 27-6 with his second of the day.
The visitors jumped from the frying pan to the fire after they were reduced to 14 men, a numerical disability that allowed Kabras to add two more tries via Cantona and Sabatia — both of which were converted by the former.
Brighton Omondi touched down over the white chalk for a last-minute consolation for Simon Odongo’s charges — the speedster adding the extras to ensure Quins do not return to Nairobi empty handed.
Oilers too slippery for Blak Blad
At the Nakuru ASK Showground, it was a ‘bloodbath’ for Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad who were thrashed 54-15 by Menengai Oilers.
The win was the seventh of the season for Gibson Weru’s charges — who are yet to taste defeat — while condemning the students to their third defeat.
Elsewhere, at the Masinde Muliro University in Kakamega, it was back to type as the students beat Kisumu RFC 25-12.
A brace apiece from Clarence Hope and Veron Kaburu as well as one more from Job Otieno earned Masinde Muliro their second win of the season as Walter Ambe pulled a consolation for the lakeside team — who beat Impala RFC in their last match.
Back to the capital, Impala RFC came away with their second win of the season, triumphing 23-20 over Strathmore University Leos at the Impala Grounds.
The Gazelles went into the interval with a 20-8 lead but were made to sweat in the second half as the visitors fought gallantly for victory.
Elsewhere, smarting from their loss to Leos last weekend, Daystar University Falcons recovered to beat Nakuru RFC 35-20 at their Athi River campus backyard.
