NAIROBI, Kenya, July 17 – Healthcare technology firm Smart Applications International has launched the Smart Elevate Student Mentorship Programme at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) aimed at bridging academia and industries.
The programme was launched at the Smart Career Fair that brought students from different faculties to learn about career opportunities, mentorship and an insight into the skills required in the healthcare technology industry.
The initiative is seeking to close the gap between academic learning and workplace readiness as healthcare systems across Africa increasingly adopt digital transformation, creating a demand for graduates with practical skills and industry exposure.
“Across Africa, the healthcare technology industry needs young people who understand both innovation and the realities of healthcare delivery. Investing in student mentorship is therefore not only a company priority but an industry imperative,” said Isaiah Mosiori, Chief Executive Officer of Smart Applications International Kenya.
He said the programme will guide students through career exploration, mentorship, internships, graduate training and long-term professional development within the healthcare technology sector.
The company said industry-led graduate development programmes are becoming increasingly important in equipping young professionals with the technical skills and practical experience needed to support digital transformation in healthcare and insurance.
Group Human Resources Director Jane Gikonyo said the programme is designed to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals capable of driving healthcare and technology innovation across Africa.
“The Smart Elevate Student Mentorship Programme reflects the broader need to develop African talent through structured learning, practical exposure and professional growth,” she said.
JKUAT Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Prof. Robert Kinyua welcomed the partnership, noting that closer collaboration between universities and industry is essential in preparing students for the demands of the modern workplace.
“Partnerships between universities and industry are vital in preparing students for the realities of the modern workplace, especially in critical and growing fields such as healthcare technology,” he said.
Students who enrolled in the programme during the career fair will receive mentorship, career guidance, internship opportunities and a pathway into graduate trainee positions, helping strengthen Africa’s healthcare technology workforce.
