Security beefed up at Malindi Court as Cult leader Mackenzie, 30 others to be charged with murder

MOMBASA, Kenya, Jan 17 – Security was on Wednesday beefed up around the Malindi Law Courts as Shakahola cult leader Paul Mackenzie and 30 other suspects were escorted to the premises to answer to murder and other charges.

This comes a day after Director of Public Prosecution Renson Igonga said the 95 will be charged with murder, manslaughter, radicalisation, cruelty, and child torture among other charges.

Paul Mackenzie, a self declarerd preacher has been in police custody for more than six months now since he was arrested in April, following the discovery of hundreds of bodies in mass graves in a forested area across his 800-acre property in the coastal county of Kilifi.

Since his arrest, there have been growing calls for the government to regulate activities of religious organisations in Kenya.
