NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 7 – Detectives in Meru have launched a search for a Belgian Malinois police dog that went missing on Tuesday.
The seven-year-old brown and tan canine, assigned to the Tigania police station, was discovered missing from her kennel during a routine feeding by her handler, police say.
“He reported the same to the OCS and the Regional Dog Master,” read a police report seen by Capital News in part.
Search teams are actively scouring the area in effort to locate the dog named Jet.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that might aid in her recovery.
“Our police dogs are very dear to us. We urge anyone with information about the missing dog to report to the nearest police station,” a dog unit police officer told Capital FM News.
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), the Belgian Malinois is one of the top breeds chosen by police departments across the world and “are excellent at apprehending suspects.”
Founded in 1884, the not-for-profit AKC is the recognized and trusted expert in breed, health, and training information for all dogs.
The Belgian Malinois is also among the top choices of the military elite units including United States Navy SEALS.
AKC further describes the Belgian Malinois as “squarely built, proud, and alert herders standing 22 to 26 inches.”
“The smart, confident, and versatile Belgian Malinois is a world-class worker who forges an unbreakable bond with his human partner. To deny a Mal activity and the pleasure of your company is to deprive him of his very reasons for being,” AKC says on its website.
