NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 7 – The Ministry of Health (MoH) Kenya is planning to establish two new Level VI Teaching and Referral Hospitals in Bungoma County and Kericho County as part of efforts to expand access to specialized healthcare services.
According to a feasibility study brief, the proposed project will assess the technical, financial, economic, environmental, legal, institutional, and operational viability of setting up the two tertiary health facilities in the identified counties.
The study aims to generate evidence to guide the government and development partners on whether the establishment of the hospitals is feasible and sustainable.
If approved, the facilities will operate as Level VI Teaching and Referral Hospitals—the highest level in Kenya’s healthcare system—providing specialized treatment, medical training, and research services.
The feasibility assessment will include topographical surveys, geotechnical investigations, infrastructure evaluations, and environmental baseline studies to determine the suitability of the proposed sites.
Consultants will also evaluate existing and future capacity for essential utilities such as electricity, water supply, sewerage systems, ICT infrastructure, medical waste management, and transport connectivity.
Additionally, the study will identify potential opportunities, constraints, and risks that could influence the design, cost, or implementation timeline of the project.
The findings will inform the next phase of the project, including detailed architectural and engineering designs, financing arrangements, and procurement processes.
If implemented, the new facilities are expected to strengthen referral services and ease pressure on existing national referral hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
