NAIROBI, Kenya, June 24, 2026 – Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League side Mathare United have unveiled former Harambee Starlets boss David Ouma as their new head coach.

The slumboys revealed that Ouma has signed a one-year deal and will commence pre-season training, immediately.

“Ouma, a MYSA alumnus, first served at the club as an assistant head coach between 2004 and 2005. He has signed a year-long deal and will begin his role immediately, with his first task being to bring the team together for pre-season training,” the 2007 league champions said.

Ouma returns to the country after a three-year stint in Tanzania where he worked for Coastal Union and Singida Black Stars.

Having joined Coastal Union in November 2023, the experienced tactician miraculously secured a top four finish for a side that had been tottering dangerously on the cliff of relegation.

The result secured the club’s return to continental football for the first time in 35 years, competing in the 2024 Caf Confederations Cup.

Ouma then departed Coastal Union in April 2024 to join Singida Black Stars, initially as an assistant to Miguel Gamondi before he was elevated to the top job in January 2026.

Before then, the Caf A coaching license holder was the interim head coach since February 2025 during which he steered them to the Cecafa Club Cup title.

However, Ouma’s end at Singida Black Stars was unceremonious as his bosses dissolved the entire technical bench owing to poor performances that left them slumped in sixth place, as at April this year.

Regardless, his vast experience and tendency to get results will come in handy for his new club, which survived relegation by the skin of their teeth, last season.

Mathare finished 14th on the log with 41 points, only securing safety on the last day with a 1-0 win over Bandari at the Kericho Green Stadium.

In Kenya, Ouma has previously coached Sofapaka and Bandari, in addition to holding positions in the techical benches of Mathare United and Posta Rangers.

As Starlets head coach, he led the team to their first-ever Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (Awcon) in 2016 in Cameroon.
