NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 3 – Kapeseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi is in trouble for insulting the Luo community over recent demonstrations that rocked the lakeside city of Kisumu.
Sudi called a press conference at his Kapseret residence at the weekend, during which he told off the entire Luo community and their leaders, saying they should shape up.
“Shame on you wajaluo na viongozi wajaluo,” he said at the press conference, “nyinyi ni wakumbafu.”
Sudi said he was angered by the community for taking part in the demonstrations called by Opposition leader Raila Odinga, during which shops and other businesses were looted or vandalised.
At least three people, including a policeman were killed in the demonstrations.
These are the words that have angered lawyer Apollo Mboya who has written to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), seeking action against the vocal MP.
“The said words were intended and indeed incited feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence and discrimination against the Luo community on the basis of ethnicity contrary to section 62 of the NCIC Act,” Mboya said in a letter to NCIC Chief Executive Officer Skitter Ocharo.
Mboya wants NCIC to take action against the MP failure to which he will take legal action against it.
“Take notice that in the event of your failure to exercise your mandate within 24 hours of receipt of this letter, we shall commence the necessary legal proceedings against NCIC and the Member of Parliament including applying for the removal of the Commissioners of NCIC without further reference to you whatsoever and at your detriment as to intended consequences,” he said in the letter.
Odinga has since called off the protests to give dialogue a chance following an appeal by President William Ruto.
