Kenya Power sets new peak demand record at 2,439MW

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 6 – Kenya’s electricity demand has hit a new all-time peak of 2,439.06MW, driven by increased customer connections and rising industrial activity, Kenya Power said on Saturday.

The new peak, recorded on December 4, surpasses the previous high of 2,418.77MW logged on November 18, underscoring what the utility says is growing economic and household electricity usage.

Kenya Power attributed the rising demand to network reinforcement projects, grid stabilisation investments and higher consumption from business and domestic consumers.

Managing Director and CEO Dr (Eng.) Joseph Siror said new customer connections, industrial growth and improved system efficiency continue to push national electricity usage upward.

“We are glad to see this energy demand growing owing to increased domestic and commercial activities in the country,” he said.

“Industrial customers accounted for more than half of our unit sales in the year to June 2025, underscoring Kenya Power’s role in powering economic growth. What we need to focus on now is the generation bit to help secure our reserve margins.”

In the year ended June 2025, the utility connected 401,848 new customers, adding 203GWh in new electricity sales.

System losses fell from 23.16 percent to 21.21 percent following measures such as accelerated smart-meter rollout, targeted feeder upgrades, faulty meter replacement and better energy accounting.

Reliability also improved, with the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) dropping from 120.6 to 113 hours, and the System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) improving from 47.00 to 44.07.

Kenya Power expects demand to grow further as it rolls out new connectivity projects. The firm has also digitised its electricity-connection application process to speed up service delivery and enhance customer experience.
