NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 29 – The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning about the likelihood of heavy rainfall set to occur in the country between April and June 2024.
This comes days after heavy downpours accompanied by strong gusty winds left a trail of destruction in their wake, in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
The weatherman had earlier this week cautioned that these rains may lead to flash floods in certain areas, urging residents to remain vigilant. The rainfall is expected to persist until the end of the week
The public is advised to stay informed about the changing weather patterns and to adhere to safety precautions.
“The highest seasonal rainfall amounts (greater than 300mm) are normally experienced over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Central and South Rift Valley, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County) and the Coastal Strip,” the Kenya Meteorological Department David Gikungu stated.
The weatherman noted that most region’s rainfall amounts are likely to hit above the season’s long-term average except the coastal strips which could either be near to above the long-term average amounts for the season.
He further stated that the peak of the rains is expected to be in April for most regions, except over the Coastal Strip where the peak is expected in May.
He added that temperatures are predicted to be warmer than average in most parts of the country with higher probabilities foreseen over the coastal and northern parts of the country.
According to the forecast, counties in the Highland west of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Central and South Rift Valley are expected to continue experiencing rains from February with good distribution that will proceed till June whereas those in the Highland East of the Rift Valley-Nairobi included will continue experiencing rains from February followed by dry spell till third to fourth week of March with fair to good distribution.
He further mentioned that areas in the Southeastern Lowlands and Coastal region should look forward to fair to good distribution of rainfall.
In addition, according to the department, the Coast regions are set to experience the rains up until June, while Southeastern Lowlands and the Northern regions expected to halt in the second to third week of May.
Kenyans have been urged to only rely on authentic sources to get their weather predictions.
