NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 23 – Construction of the proposed Jumuia Market at the Busia border has not started, with the process of acquiring a title deed and completing project designs still ongoing.
The National Assembly Select Committee on Regional Integration was briefed on the status of the 40-acre project during an inspection of the proposed site yesterday.
Ministry of East African Community official Joseph Atito told the Committee that construction would commence once the outstanding processes are completed.
The Jumuia Market is intended to promote inclusive cross-border trade among Kenyan, Ugandan and other East African traders.
Committee Chairperson Irene Mayaka said the project would help enhance trade opportunities for communities living along the border.
The Committee also inspected operations at the Busia and Malaba One-Stop Border Posts, where officials raised concerns over congestion, smuggling and limited truck parking space.
The Committee will incorporate its findings and recommendations into a report to be shared with relevant government agencies.
