NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 2 — The government has announced a registration drive targeting 5,000 new beneficiaries of Inua Jamii cash transfer programme.
In a statement on Saturday, Principal Secretary for Labor and Social Protection Joseph Motari said the drive is in line with the department’s aim to alleviate poverty and improve the well-being of those in need in line of the government’s Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The Inua Jamii registration exercise will bring on board older members of the society aged 70 years and above, people with severe disabilities and orphans whose caregivers are unable to fully support them.
“The registration, which will continue in the next 20 days countrywide will see the beneficiaries receive a monthly stipend of Sh2,000,” he said.
Motari added the registration will take place at sub-county social development officers across the country.
Eligible individuals were advised to present their national identity cards and copies of the necessary documents required.
“We urge older persons who are not yet registered in the programme as well caregivers for orphans and the vulnerable children and people with severe disabilities to seize this opportunity and register,” he added.
The PS said the government has already moved to pay the cash transfer monthly as directed by President William Ruto.
The August cash transfers have already been disbursed.
This comes when on August 8, 2023, the cabinet approved the registration of 500,000 new beneficiaries in the 2023-2024 financial year.
As of July 2023, the programme had 1,042,864 beneficiaries out of the expected 1,233,129 beneficiaries.
During the Kenya social protection conference in April 2023, President Ruto committed to increasing the number of programme beneficiaries to 2.5 million in the next three years.
