Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Dr. Zhou Pingjian speaks during the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) Convention held at Leopard Beach Resort, Diani on December 2, 2022.

DIANI, Kenya Dec 2 – “I repeat, Taiwan is part of China”, This was emphasised by Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Dr. Zhou Pingjian who was the keynote speaker at the 5th Annual Editor’s Convention.

Taiwan is self-ruled – but China sees it as a breakaway province that will eventually unite with it.

Dr Zhou told editors attending the convention organised by their umbrella body, the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG), that under the One China Principal, Taiwan can not be separated.

“That is why we keep reminding those who tend to forget the facts that Taiwan is part of China,” he said at the convention Friday, “We work hard for the re-unification of China.”

Responding to a question from an Editor at the forum on teh basis of China’s stance, the envoy said “The One China Principal is a basic international law.”

And to emphasis his point, Dr Zhou, who spoke at the KEG convention in Diani, said Taiwan’s official airline todate is China Airlines and challenged editors on “when then can it be a separate country from China”.

Taiwan, an island between the East and South China seas in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, declared itself the Republic of China but authorities in Beijing has dismissed it and vowed to re-unite it however long it takes.

The territories controlled by Taiwan consit of 168 islands with a combined area of 36,193 square kilometers or 13,964 sq mi.

A controversial visit in August by senior US politician Nancy Pelosi enraged Beijing which responded by holding the largest ever military drills in the seas around Taiwan.

And this week, China has accused British lawmakers of “gross interference” in its internal affairs as a group of MPs visit Taiwan.

Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee arrived on Tuesday and have met high-level officials, including Taiwan’s foreign minister, Joseph Wu.
