NAIROBI Kenya, Jun 22 — More than 300 delegates allied to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Friday stormed United Democratic Alliance (UDA) headquarters over delayed Nairobi Chairmanship elections.
In a video seen by Capital News, the delegates chanting ‘tunataka uchaguzi kesho’ meaning ‘We want elections held tomorrow’ staged a protest at the UDA Headquarters along Ngong Road following the third postponement of the elections.
Governor Sakaja is facing off with Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya for the county chairmanship.
The Nairobi UDA Chairmanship elections were scheduled for June 22 at the Bomas of Kenya.
UDA National Elections Board (NEB) Chairperson Antony Mwaura in a statement on Friday cited ‘unavoidable circumstances’ as the reason for deferring the polls once more.
“The National Elections Board of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) hereby issues a notice of cancellation of County-level election in Nairobi County, which was scheduled to take place on the 22nd of June 2024, at the Bomas of Kenya,” Mwaura said.
“Due to unavoidable circumstances, the County-level election for Nairobi County will not take place as planned. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.”
Mwaura said further information regarding the rescheduling of the election will be communicated in due course.
The Political Parties Dispute Tribunal halted the Nairobi elections on June 6, following a complaint lodged by one of the factions.
President Ruto had directed his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua to lead talks between the two camps and find the way forward in efforts to find a solution.
“On Nairobi where two camps are at loggerheads on the process of elections, Ruto directed Deputy President to lead in negotiations that will lead to a political settlement,” read a statement from the UDA election Board released on June 9.
