NAIROBI, Kenya, May 9 – Safaricom Limited is experiencing a major enterprise data service outage, the company announced on Wednesday.
The outage which began on Tuesday evening has been traced to a technical fault in the routing systems.
The company’s engineers are currently working with its technology partners to restore services.
The enterprise data service outage affects primarily Safaricom’s business customers nationwide, who rely on fixed data services either on fibre optic or WiMax for their connectivity requirements.
Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore said all the company’s efforts are currently focused on ensuring that the services are back up and running in the shortest time possible.
However, the firm clarified that the enterprise data outage does not affect its mobile data users on 3G mobile handsets and modems.
Last week Safaricom discontinued the sale of all unlimited data bundle products citing misuse of the bandwidth by some users, which negatively impacted service delivery.
The move affected daily, three-day, seven-day and 30-day unlimited bundles.
At the time, the company advised high bundle users to find alternatives in the current limited bundles it offers on fixed broadband services like fibre or WiMax.
Safaricom has dominated the Kenyan data market with 90 percent of mobile broadband subscribers and over five million Internet users, which has prompted its competitors to revamp their unlimited offerings to attract customers.
The mobile operator, which has been experiencing drops in its profit in the recent past, is set to announce its full year financial results for 2011/2012 on Thursday.
