NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 23 – President William Ruto has taken aim at politicians who he says are using tribal rhetoric to divide Kenyans.

Speaking in Taita Taveta, Ruto said Kenya needs political leaders who can bring citizens together rather than exploit ethnic differences.

“There are some politicians who are not very intelligent. They come here and divide the people. They bring hatred, they bring divisions, and they say these are cousins, these are traitors, these are betrayers, those are enemies. That is outdated politics. Such people should not even be leaders, whether of a village or even a cattle-dip chairman. Those are useless people,” the President said.

Ruto questioned whether Kenyans elect their representatives based on tribe or on the work they have done.

“Let me ask you: when you elect a leader, do you judge them by their appearance or by their work? Do you judge them by their tribe or by their work? Do you judge them by the intrigues they engage in or by their work?”

“Let them build railways, build roads, build markets, build housing, take children to school and ensure people receive healthcare and are able to pay for it. That is the scorecard,” Ruto asserted
