NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 29 – As he prepares for his second appearance at the World Indoor Championships, Commonwealth Games champion and African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala has lauded his improvement under new coach Geoffrey Kimani.
Omanyala shifted to Kimani’s tactical acumen at the start of the season after separating from his long-time coach Duncan Ayiemba and says he feels he has become better and ready to step up into new horizons of his career in 2024.
“Working with coach Kim, I have learnt so many things and improved a lot,” Omanyala told Capital Sport in an interview from Glasgow, just after arriving in the Scottish capital for the World Indoor Championships.
Omanyala ran two national records in the 60m in his two Indoor races in France at the start of February, and he says this is testament that he is at a better placed compared to last season.
“We broke two national records in the Indoor Tour which I did and this is massive. Of course, I feel I am way better, especially having a personal best as a season opener. It can only get better from here,” further notes Omanyala.
The 27-year-old Kenyan sprint sensation will compete in the 60m dash in Glasgow, where he reached the semis, running 6.64.
This season, with a consistent time of 6.51 and 6.52 in both competitive indoor races he has competed in, Omanyala is optimistic of doing better.
“The preparations have been great. I am excited to be here again and I am looking forward to what the competition has to offer,” he tells Capital Sport.
He adds; “I don’t want to get ahead of myself. My main focus will be execution; executing the races how we trained. I know it is not going to be easy but I am well prepared for this.”
Omanyala ran two indoor races in France; in Miramas and Paris, then headed to Germany for a week-long training camp at the Red Bull centre before returning home to fine tune.
He left for Glasgow last Friday and has already had a few days under his belt to train in the track to be used for the Championship which guns off on Friday.
The heats of the men’s 60m dash are scheduled for the opening day of the competition on Friday.
