NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 23 — Mama Sarah Cherono Cheruiyot, President William Ruto’s mother, left an audience in Eldoret in stitches after she offered a leso to a female journalist whose dress she considered too revealing.
Mama Sarah, who was visiting Uasin Gishu County headquarters on Thursday, humorously said she intervened after realizing the journalist would struggle to pick her equipment had it dropped to the ground given the length of the dress she was wearing.
She went on to counsel that women ought to carry along lesos which come in handy in situations such as the journalist faced.
“We were taught long ago that a woman should not go anywhere without a leso. You might find a pregnant woman on the way who is giving birth and you won’t be able to help if you have nothing to cover her,” she said.
“I saw my daughter in a short dress and wondered what would happen if a camera fell and she bends down to pick it; there will be nothing covering her. So I decided to cover her.”
Mama Sarah went on to state that she had no intention to embarrass the journalist.
“Do not feel like I have come to a shame you. I have come to bless you.”
Mama Sarah was gracing an event by Governor Jonathan Bii who issued title deeds to at least 505 families, under the National land Titling Programme.
