With the Coronavirus pandemic rousing in the world, divorce rate is also rising at a significant rate.
Many couples have come to realize that their relationships are not as great as they thought, perhaps only working because of other activities they had during the day that kept them busy and limiting interactions with their significant other.
Here are some factors that influence divorce during quarantine and how to avoid or fix it:
1. Too much work before the quarantine
Working long hours is not really the problem but, not making the time to be with your partner can present itself as an issue. This often leads to a shallow relationship with your partner. Now with the lockdown, you realize that you barely have things to do together and barely know each. In some instances, this could have you thinking you are not suited for each other, leading some to contemplate divorce.
How to fix: Make sure you take a break to be with your partner. Plan a fun activity, re-create your first date or picnic at home. Spend time just the two of you, so you can learn more about each other.
2. Addiction and Abuse
Coronavirus has led to a difficult and unexpected turn of events for everyone. People have lost their jobs and have been separated from friends and family. Understandably it can all be a little stressful. As a coping mechanism, people are turning to alcohol and drugs to distract themselves from their realities.
An increase in domestic violence reports has been noted during this pandemic. According to a report, “Domestic violence associations are facing a double-edged sword: With many social workers having to work from home, they are unable to reach victims; and when people need to be brought to safety, there are often not enough places to find refuge.”
The situation only has more women looking for a way out, seeking divorce or separation as a solution.
How to fix: Change your way of coping with stress and find comfort in fun activities with your partner like cooking, working out, dancing or learning a new skill. In these uncertain times, it is vital that one is able to deal with stress and anxiety in a healthy manner, before it gets out of control.
3. In-laws third wheels of your relationships
Many people have been quarantined with their parents or siblings which is at first glance a good thing, offering a time to bond. However, this can be toxic to a relationship when different individuals make others uncomfortable, unwanted and continue to fuel disagreement in your marriage.
How to fix: Your marriage must be your priority. Make sure the family members understand your boundaries as a couple. As individuals within a couple make sure you talk, reassure, encourage, appreciate and show love to your partner at every occasion.
How are you keeping your relationship fresh while in quarantine?
