Lipton, Kenyan Govt eye better earnings for tea farmers

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 12 – Dutch tea company Lipton Teas and Infusions has said that it will work with the Kenyan government to increase earnings for tea farmers.

The collaboration also seeks to promote sustainable and responsible practices in the tea sector as well as develop the country as a role model in sustainable tea sourcing.

This will be showcased at the September’s Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi.

“I have met with the leadership of Lipton Teas and Infusion,” President William Ruto said.

“I impressed on them the need to develop a better value chain arrangement that will see our farmers earn better from the crop,” Ruto added.

“We have scheduled a meeting in Nairobi in July to agree on a proposed development of the ‘Product of Kenya’ trademarked tea that will build on their premium brand and add more value to our obviously superior teas. Looking forward to the meeting.”

Lipton Tea and Infusions is the world’s largest tea business company, with brands such as Lipton, PG Tips, TAZO, and Brooke Bond, among others.

“It is a great honour to have had the opportunity to present to President Dr William Ruto today the commitments of Lipton Teas and Infusions to strengthen value creation for all stakeholders in the Kenyan tea industry,” Nathalie Roos, CEO of Lipton Teas and Infusions, stated.

“We are committed to working with the President to make Kenya a model nation for tea, grown and developed to the highest social and environmental standards.”

The state will also work with the company to develop Kericho into a tea region and introduce effective social and economic empowerment programs to address social issues.
