NAIROBI, Kenya, July 1 – The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has warned the public and business community over a wave of fraudulent activities carried out by individuals posing as KEBS officials.
The bureau in a public notice asserted that the imposters, allegedly working for a private firm named Multi-Works and Rights Enforcements Co. Ltd, have been illegally conducting raids, inspections, and extortion under the guise of enforcing the Consumer Protection Act.
The most alarming case was reported on June 16, 2025, in Bomet County, where businesses were raided, and bribes of up to KSh 20,000 were demanded per shop.
“These individuals are not KEBS officials. We strongly disassociate ourselves from their actions and condemn them in the strongest terms possible,” read the notice in part.
According to KEBS, investigations show this fraud is widespread, with similar incidents reported in Kisumu, Kakamega, Meru, Machakos, Mombasa, and Voi.
KEBS has confirmed that Multi-Works is not affiliated with the bureau, and its previous gazette recognition has been cancelled.
“When legitimate KEBS personnel conduct official duties, they must produce their Certificate of Appointment and KEBS Staff ID.”
KEBS advises the public to verify IDs via SMS to 20023 or call the toll-free line 1545.
The bureau added that it is working with the DCI, ODPP, NPS, and EACC to bring the imposters to justice.
Kenyans are urged to report suspicious activity and avoid complying with illegal demands from unverified individuals.
