The Equity Wings To Fly program has had quite the impact.
Since its establishment in 2008, it has seen thousands of students through high school education providing scholarships that have changed the trajectory of the lives of many. James Mwangi Equity Bank CEO spoke at the joyous occasion hosted by the institution to celebrate the achievement of 13 Wings To Fly scholars who achieved A grade at the KCSE examinations. Mwangi pointed out, “Last year we had 2,000 scholars and with us is a team of 13 outstanding scholars who managed to score an A grade. In 2017 there were 9 Wing To Fly scholars to attained A’s.”
The Foundation’s 6th cohort had 2,000 students sit for the national examination, 74% of whom attained C+ and above mean grade that will see them eligible to join the university. Among the 13 was Alphania Wanjira a Starehe Girls Center alumni from Kawangware, John Imasi from Kapsabet Boys as well as Mercy Kerubo from Kisii.
Speaking about the diversity and selection of the students in the Wings To Fly program, James Mwangi stated “The performance of the Wings to Fly scholars represents the face of Kenya. We are very proud of this program that gives equal opportunity to all.”
Out of the 10,060 scholars who have already completed their KCSE as part of the program, 5,431 have joined the Equity Bank’s paid internship program. This number is set to increase with this years’ additions to the programme. Through the Equity Leadership Programme, 465 scholars have been supported to secure admissions at global universities with the rest joining universities in Kenya.
Dr. Beth W. Waweru, General Manager of Education and Leadership Development at the Equity Group Foundation spoke about the impact the scholarships have had within the last 8 years. Reflecting on the individuals, she pointed out that the mentorship and skill building offered by the program ensures that well-rounded individuals exit the program. Dr. Waweru mentioned the zeal, diligence, and generosity of previous Wings To Fly scholars such as David Okinyi as constant encouragement for the Foundation to keep sponsoring Kenya’s impoverished youth.
One of the beneficiaries, John Kerario from Kapsabet Boys’ High School, noted that the Wings To Fly programme had put him one step closer to achieving his dreams. “I will remain eternally grateful for the Wings To Fly programme for helping me complete my high school education. Some of my friends were unable to continue with their education despite getting good marks in their KCPE exams. After going to university, I hope that I will now be in a better position to assist others who may have faced challenges similar to mine,” he said.
Equity Group Foundation is set to commission the 10th cohort of students set to join secondary school tomorrow (4.1.2019).
