Bangladesh measles outbreak death toll rises to 1,122

Oct 5 – The death toll from Bangladesh’s measles outbreak has risen to 1,122 after eight more people died from measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said Saturday that 1,109 people were hospitalised with measles-like symptoms during the period, including 82 confirmed measles cases.

No deaths from confirmed measles were recorded during the 24-hour period, according to the DGHS.

Since March 15, a total of 21,666 people have been confirmed to have measles, while 195,197 suspected cases have been reported, the health authorities said.

The DGHS said 173,024 people have so far been hospitalised, of whom 167,756 have recovered and been discharged.

Of the 1,122 deaths recorded since the outbreak began, 102 were confirmed measles deaths, while 1,020 involved people who died with suspected measles.
