NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 5 – The African Union Commission (AU), in partnership with the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA), has convened a three-day technical-level consultation aimed at revitalizing the Nouakchott and Djibouti Processes.
The event is taking place in Nouakchott, Mauritania, and is hosted in collaboration with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
The Nouakchott and Djibouti Processes were established to address security threats in the Sahelo-Sahara and Horn of Africa/East Africa regions, respectively.
The meeting, which commenced on Sunday, November 5, gathers Member States and Parties involved in both the Nouakchott and Djibouti Processes, as well as Member States of the Accra Initiative. Additionally, it brings together Regional Economic Communities, Regional Mechanisms, and various other security stakeholders operating in these regions.
The primary objective of this joint consultation meeting is to address the growing threat of terrorism. It seeks to foster a shared understanding of the scope, dimensions, and magnitude of this threat. Furthermore, the meeting aims to establish modalities for enhanced information and intelligence sharing and cooperation.
Officials said the deliberations will identify strategies to assist Member States in addressing existential security threats. The outcome will involve a collective agreement on modalities and a roadmap for cooperation and collaboration in the year 2024.
The meeting represents a critical step towards enhancing regional security efforts and tackling the complex and evolving security challenges facing the Sahelo-Sahara and Horn of Africa/East Africa regions.
