Last month, I had the distinct pleasure of travelling to Zanzibar for the first time, along with other journalists, and content creators, courtesy of Jambojet, as they launched their inaugural Mombasa to Zanzibar route.

The excitement in the air was palpable as we departed from Mombasa’s Moi International Airport (MBA/HKMO) and touched down at Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA).

The experience culminated with a beach escapade on a nearby sandbank, where we enjoyed a Zanzibar-style brunch, sunbathing, and swimming.

A short boat ride from Zanzibar’s main island takes you to Prison Island, a place where history and nature converge. Once a prison, the island is now a sanctuary for giant tortoises, some over 100 years old. Walking through the lush greenery, exploring the old prison buildings, and interacting with these gentle giants was a memorable experience that brought the island’s history to life.
Wander Through History: Stone Town
Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the beating heart of Zanzibar’s history and culture. Its labyrinthine streets, adorned with ornate doors and historic buildings, offer a journey through time. I spent time wandering through the vibrant streets, shopping for unique souvenirs, and discovering hidden gems like the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, and the former slave market. The charm of Stone Town lies in its ability to transport you to a different era with every twist and turn.
Savour the Flavors: Spice Farm Tour
Zanzibar’s nickname, the “Spice Island,” is well-earned. A visit to one of the island’s spice farms is a feast for the senses. From cloves to nutmeg, cinnamon to black pepper, I learned about the cultivation, harvesting, and uses of these aromatic treasures. The vibrant colours and intoxicating fragrances were a true highlight of the trip, offering a glimpse into Zanzibar’s rich agricultural heritage.
Support Marine Conservation: Mnarani Turtle Sanctuary
For those who love nature, the Mnarani Turtle Sanctuary is a must-visit. The sanctuary’s efforts in sea turtle conservation are inspiring, and visitors can observe these magnificent creatures as they hatch, swim, and bask in the sun. Participating in beach clean-ups or volunteer programs adds a meaningful touch to your visit, making it more than just a tourist stop.
Experience Local Thrills: Forodhani Pier Divers
At Forodhani Pier, adventure and local culture collide most thrillingly. Watching fearless locals dive into the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean was a highlight. The energy, joy, and skill on display captured the vibrant spirit of Zanzibar, making this a spot I’ll never forget.
