Weird World: Students collect diplomas on jet skis

Students graduating from a school in Florida collected diplomas using jet skis.

The unique ceremony was held in place of the traditional graduation, which had been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Graduates from Somerset Island Prep high school took to the water to pick up their diplomas from principal Tom Rompella, who was standing on a docked boat and used a grabber pole device to avoid making hand contact.

According to the Miami Herald newspaper, graduates took a three-hour jet ski training course provided by a local company. Underneath their robes, they also had life jackets to ensure their safety as they whizzed out onto the water.

In a statement, Rompella said: “This final ceremony for our seniors represents the same theme that has played out through the entirety of their time at Island Prep: that no barrier is too large to overcome and that through creativity and hard work we can overcome any challenge.”
