The BET 2020 performances were epic, and well coordinated to fit the hard times we’ve faced in 2020. Serving as a commentary on the current times, it was a must-watch show.
The annual show is a platform to address the plight of Africa Americans, and this year’s edition was more poignant cutting to the heart of the Black Lives Matter movement. Hip hop legends were not left behind, with the 1989 track ‘Fight The Power’ by Public Enemy receiving a refresh. Several major acts were featured in the BET exclusive including Nas, Rhapsody, Black Thought, Jahi and YG.
The original release ‘Fight The Power’ was a revolutionary release by the award winning duo consisting of Chuck D and DJ Lord. The track was also featured as the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s NAACP two-time award winner ‘Do The Right Thing.’
Now in light of George Floyd’s death and the series of protests sparked across the globe, it seems that the black experience is at the fore of public discussion, and the 2020 ‘Fight The Power’ continues to put fuel to the fire. With rappers mentioning the names of various police brutality victims including Breonna Taylor, as well the Rayshard Brooks who was killed outside a Wendy’s drive-through on June 12th; the rap legends featured on the track may have just created the sound that will keep protestors energized while in pursuit of real change.
The track amplifies the core message of the Black Lives Matter, and sustains the conversation around police brutality and systemic racism in the United States of America.
The BET 2020 awards was a virtual show, held on June 28th, 2020. The ceremony celebrated and honored individuals in music, sports, television, and movies. They also commemorated the many African-American people killed from racism.
