Since blowing up in 2013 with her stratospheric “Mtoto” debut, Victoria Kimani has had quite the illustrious music career. With countless hits, an undeniable sense of style and reverence that runs ocean-deep, the “China Love” singer has amassed a sea of industry knowledge.
The Sauce caught up with the globe-trotting singer and got the lowdown on what she has hitherto got going on.
Badman Killa, Comic Book
Her latest single is badass as they come. Titled “Badman Killa,” the eclectic is co-produced by Diplo, with Kimani describing it as “the underdog anthem for people that build and eat in silence. She says she recorded the first verse of the song years ago, but recorded the second verse just weeks before dropping the song. She promises more singles that bear a similar flair in the upcoming months. To boot it all up, she released a comic book that pretty much endorses the themes of the song.
Chocolate City
The talented singer-songwriter was initially signed on Nigerian record Chocolate City, through which her first album “Safari” came out. After 5 years, Kimani quit the label in her quest for independent music pursuits. She has released 4 studios since; Afropolitan, Afreaka, Spirit and her latest LP, Mood 4 Life independently, which she reckons is not always an easy feat. “When you’re on a label, you have a team of different people assigned different roles. If things. go wrong, you could blame them. As an independent artist, you only have yourself to blame,” She says.
From Strategy To Stage Course
As part of her efforts to give back, the “Show” singer has a new 9-module online course for women in the entertainment industry. She says what buoyed her to create the course that would share all the gems she wishes somebody had taught her when she was on the up and coming. “If somebody had held my hand back then, it would have saved so much time and energy. This is my way of doing what I wish somebody had done for me,” She adds of the 59-lesson course.
Docu Series
Kimani first dipped her feet in reality TV when she filmed her “The Rise of Queen Victoria” reality show shortly after signing her record deal with Chocolate City. She is now working on her own document series to tell her own story. “I love documentaries. I have a lot of stories in my career that I have never told. Songs that have stolen from me and so many other different things that I have experienced yet never shared. I think a document series is a great way to bring people from the past and bring them into present day.
She has plans on releasing a song every month leading up to the release of her 6th album, with the next one set to drop before the end of August.
