The Vice Presidential debate took place at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, pitting 2 sets of running mates representing the major contesting political parties.
Moderated by a select few journalists from renowned TV stations, the debate has had Kenyans talking for more than the last 12 hours. From memorable quotes to bold, uninhibited answers from the running mates to not-so-easy questions from the interviewers, it was the debate gift that kept on giving.
First was Roots Party vice presidential candidate Justina Wamae against Agano Party’s Ruth Mutua. The two ladies had Kenyans glued to their screens as the two political newbies took to the podium to articulate their campaign agenda to prospective voters in the upcoming general elections. It suffices to say that Wamae came armed with razor-sharp witty answers and swift, well-informed responses to all the interviewers’ questions, backed with researched information and all that jazz.
Mutua would typically attempt to tear into Roots Party’s main manifesto agenda which entails the legalization of marijuana for export. Wamae would buoyantly hit back with factual information leaving everyone amazed.
Then came Azimio’s Martha Karua and UDA’s Rigathi Gachagua. The two vice presidential hopefuls took it to the next tier with responses to the hard-knock questions from Sophia Wanuna and James Smart. Gachagua at one point launched an attack at the Kenyatta family claiming they were behind state capture – Kenyans were somewhat intrigued by him using the phrase. However, he reached out for a note in his pocket to confirm its meaning, attracting ridicule from KOT.
Martha Karua sarcastically responded to the comment on Azimio being a project of outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta, saying they were instead a project of Kenyans.
