Ugandan Politician Bobi Wine’s Documentary Nominated For The 2024 Oscar Awards

Ugandan singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has garnered widespread acclaim as his documentary, ‘The People’s President,’ secures a nomination for Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 Oscars.

The diverse array of nominees in the category includes ‘The Eternal Memory,’ ‘Four Daughters,’ ‘To Kill a Tiger,’ and ’20 Days in Mariupol.’ The nomination marks a historic moment for the Ugandan artist and politician, who took to his X account to express gratitude for the acknowledgment, describing it as a ‘humbling moment’ and seizing the opportunity to advocate for a democratic Uganda.

In his social media post, Bobi Wine emphasized the significance of the documentary, titled #BobiWineThePeoplesPresident, which sheds light on General @KagutaMuseveni’s authoritarian regime and the resilient citizens pushing back. He asserted, “Today the fight for democracy in Uganda and around the world lives on. Thank you for this recognition!”

The documentary, created by filmmakers Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp, received accolades even before its official release in 2022. It was honored as the ‘2022 Audience Award: Best Documentary Feature’ at the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF). Subsequently, in April 2023, the film secured ‘The Audience Prize’ and the Bronze Goal for Best Film on Human Rights at the 2023 Millenium International Documentary Film Festival in Brussels, Belgium.

Released officially in September 2023, the documentary provides a compelling narrative of Bobi Wine’s political journey from his entry into politics in 2017, when he became Kyaddondo East MP, to his participation in the 2021 presidential race. It offers an intimate look at how Bobi Wine, also known for his ‘Kyarenga’ hit, employs his music as a powerful tool in challenging the regime led by the long-serving Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

The groundbreaking recognition follows the film’s recent win of the ‘Audience Choice Award’ at the prestigious Cinema Eye Honors 2024 Awards on January 12, 2024, held at the New York Academy of Medicine in East Harlem.

The 96th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on March 10, 2024, in Hollywood, where winners in various categories, including Best Documentary Feature, will be announced.
