The youth hearts initiative is on a mission to end period shame and empower young girls.
The initiative recently took its campaign to Mathare for a pad drive where they ensured that girls access menstrual care by providing a dignity kit containing pads, underpants, and soap.
The initiative is also keen on educating young girls on menstruation and period hygiene. The organization believes that the use of sanitary towels and menstrual do’s and don’ts should be discussed openly to create a healthy lifestyle for women.
The pad drive was an opportunity for the hosts to interact with the young girls and have candid conversations about menstruation and womanhood.
Capital FM’S Group commercial director Farida Idris was the main guest at the event, and she motivated the young girls with her success story. Ms. Idris who hailed from a humble background did not let the adversities that she faced in life get her down, they only motivated her to work harder and become the only female director at the media company currently.
Speaking to Farida after the event, she expressed her joy in having been part of the event saying, “It was a great privilege to inspire and educate as I shared my life story, the hurdles I have faced, and how I managed to overcome challenges.”
She added, “It’s important to have open conversations on menstrual health with children in schools to address the stigma around menstruation. Let’s create a better support system for our girls to reduce the shame around periods.”
Sisters for change helped the young girls learn a whole lot about periods from how to wear a pad correctly to understanding the menstruation cycle.
The event is just the first of many as the young hearts initiative plans on organizing more pad drives.
