Saw X
John Kramer, a.k.a Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is an avenging angel who according to him isn’t actually killing anyone. He’s just giving people choices. John, our ailing anti-hero has been given a prognosis of just months to live. He then joins a cancer support group and meets a man named Henry Kessler (Michael Beach) who later tips him to a Norwegian physician who is working on a treatment that involves surgery and an experimental cocktail. What follows is a spoiler, so be warned! It turns out that the miracle healers are quacks. It was all a scam. The director, Kevin Greutert, puts a surprising amount of effort into building out the arc of the betrayal John suffers and Saw X features seven traps, each of them much gnarly than the last.
The Boogeyman
Rob Savage’s film, The Boogeyman, maximized the simplest most universal after-dark horror stories from childhood, with a scare packed adaptation of Stephen King’s short tale about shadow-dwelling demons. A recently bereaved family – a widowed father and therapist Dr. Will (Chris Messina) and two daughters, Sadie ( Sophie Thatcher) and the younger Sawyer (Vivien Blair)- find that grief leaves them vulnerable to a vicious evil entity. It’s both soft around the edges from its in-your-face jump scares and also being a gut-wrenching story about grief. Sadie and Swayer embrace unnatural terrors that spring from flung-open closet doors as distributing figures scamper between patches of blackness.
Cobweb
Peter (Woody Norman), a bullied loner is caught in the middle of the cobweb. He’s banned from trick-or-treating by his parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) and then there’s the other-worldly voice in the wall. The female voice coming from within his bedroom wall urging him to fight back against his tormentors will soon become a source of comfort for him, a guardian angel of sorts and Peter will soon realize is not all that she seems and whose advice is not always so pure.
Tell me a creepy story
Tell me a creepy story is a prime video horror anthology that rids itself of a framing device to deliver four unconnected stories. The four short stories range from bone- chilling tales dealing with serial murderers, home invasions and insatiable hunger and more.
Evil Dead Rise
It’s a movie that demands to be seen with a group of friends. Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) is dealing with a recent break-up and is stuck raising three kids, Bridget (Gabrielle Echols), Danny ( Morgan Davis) and Kassie (Nell Fisher). When Ellie’s estranged sister Beth (Lily Sullivan) comes to visit, she sends the kids out for pizza so they can talk privately. But an earthquake interrupts cutting power and mobile connections and unearths a cursed book and a violent struggle to stay alive ensues.
The Blackening
It’s a comedic horror film with more jokes than jump scares. Morgan (Yvonne) and her boyfriend Shawn (Jay) discover a race-baiting board game as they explore the cabin they have rented for a reunion of college friends. The rest of the groups arrive for a celebratory Juneteeth weekend of drugs, card playing and they find themselves in the clutches of a killer.
The fall of the House of Usher
The Netflix series begins with Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) attending a joint funeral for a number of his adult children and every episode includes flashback to a young Roderick and his twin sister Madeline and fills in how the Ushers made their fortune- profiting off the pain of others. Roderick is also having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the ever recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino) a figure that connects most of these tales as sort of a vengeful force of karma.
No matter if you’re a horror die hard or an occasional toe-dipper we hope you’ll enjoy these movies and shows on the big screen in theaters, under the stars in your backyard or in your living room.
