The Whirlwind
With everything going on in our country right now, the time has never felt more right for a political K-drama that burns the deep rooted corruption and bizarre pageantry of public offices. Prime minister Park Dong-Ho has poisoned the president as part of a scheme to expose his corrupt dealings and Blue House is thrown into chaos. Ministers are set against each other as a power struggle emerges as they each try to further their own personal goals.
Shogun
The 10 episode FX creation inspired by real historical events from the climax of Japan’s ‘Warring States’ period and based on James Clovell’s novel of the same name- follows English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) who washed up in Japan and is swiftly thrown into a power struggle between feudal lords and western traders. It’s about diplomacy, statesmanship, war and eventually love.
Supacell
This superhero drama, created by Rapman revolves around five individuals who gain unique powers. Each individual story is unique and compelling on its own and the new found abilities force the characters to navigate their lives with added complexities and unexpected challenges. This series also explores major themes that affect Black people in London including predatory medical practices and human trafficking.
House of the Dragon S2
The anticipated follow up to the HBO’s well received first season of House of the dragon is back and tension have not eased. Rhaenyra and Alicient are both in a state of deep grief and erstwhile ruler of Westeros, Aegon II is out for his half sister’s blood.
Fallout
Amazon’s adaptation of beloved video game series Fallout, opens at the height of the cold war with former TV star Cooper Howard reduced to appearing at the children’s birthday party. We cut to Vault two centuries later and one of those dwellers, Lucy ventures into the world above to rescue her father after a disastrous wedding.
True Detective: Night Country
The new season, directed and written by Issa Lopez returns in fine form with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis taking the reins of the twisty crime scenes. Detective Liz and Evangeline are investigating the disappearance of six men and both characters carry baggage: family deaths, troubled loved ones and disadvantages of being female.
Clipped
Clipped isn’t a sport story in the usual sense, it tells a story of money, sex, fame and largely takes an appropriately soap adjacent tone. The tension between Sterling, Shelly and Stiviano propels Clipped’s triangle offense. Sterling a billionaire who is in the ownership game not for the love of basketball but because he has money to be in it, Shelly who has accommodated her husband’s infidelities for decades and Stiviano who is Sterling’s current mistress and five decades his junior.
Sausage party: Foodtopia
The explicit animated romp ‘Sausage party’ that hit theater in 2016 is back with a spinoff miniseries, ‘Sausage party; Foodtopia’. The animated miniseries brings back original stars Kristen Wiig, Micheal Cera, Edward Norton and adds newcomers Will Forte and Yassir Lester. The first season picks up shortly after the films finale. The foods have escaped and conquered their human oppressors and they’re trying to build their own society.
Presumed Innocent
Inspired by Scott Turrow’s best-selling novel, Presumed innocent is a story of a horrific murder that of a horrific murder that explores obsession, sex, politics and the power of love as the accused hotshot prosecutor and devoted husband Rusty Sabich fights to hold his family and marriage together.
Baby Reindeer
Based on the real-life experiences of comedian Richard Gadd, it details his time working at a pub in his twenties where he meets a vulnerable woman called Martha who starts to develop an unhealthy obsession with him. It makes for a twisty, thought provoking drama that will linger with you thereafter.
