NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 4 – Sun King has unveiled a new range of smartphones manufactured in Kenya, targeting low-income consumers and small businesses as local production of electronic devices gains ground.

The solar energy company launched the EZ 3 and EZ 3 Pro smartphones, which are being manufactured at its facility in Kenya, expanding its local production beyond solar products.

The launch comes as the government seeks to grow domestic manufacturing of electronic devices and reduce reliance on imported finished products.

Sun King opened its manufacturing plant in Tatu City in 2025, with capacity to produce up to 700,000 smartphones and televisions annually.

The new devices are targeting consumers who need smartphones for communication, mobile money and access to digital services but may not have enough cash to purchase a handset outright.

“The EZ 3 reflects everything we’ve learned serving Kenyan customers,” said Catherine Mudachi, VP Marketing, Sun King.

“People want a phone that works, payments they can manage and a company they can trust.”

At the centre of the launch is Sun King’s buy-now-pay-later model, which allows customers to acquire the phones through a small deposit and daily instalments rather than making the full payment upfront.

The EZ 3 requires a Sh2,299 deposit followed by Sh55 daily payments, while the EZ 3 Pro requires a Sh3,099 deposit and daily payments of Sh65.

At Sh55 a day, the EZ 3 has a lower daily payment than Sun King’s earlier EZ 1, lowering the immediate cash requirement for first-time smartphone buyers and low-income households.

The model also targets micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which increasingly rely on smartphones to advertise products, communicate with customers, process mobile-money transactions and manage online sales.

For small businesses operating on tight cash flows, spreading the cost of a handset over time could allow owners to acquire a business tool without making a large upfront purchase.

However, the daily-payment model also makes the total amount paid over the repayment period an important consideration for consumers when comparing financed phones with devices bought outright.

The EZ 3 has 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, a 6.75-inch HD+ 120Hz display, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5,000mAh battery. The Pro version has 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, a 50-megapixel camera and a 6,000mAh battery.

Sun King is betting that combining local manufacturing with small daily payments can expand smartphone ownership among consumers who are priced out of conventional upfront purchases.
