Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled plans to commemorate the late Kapuka music legend E-Sir by renaming a road in South C, his home neighborhood, in the artist’s honor.
The announcement was made during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, where Governor Sakaja highlighted the transformative power of Kenya’s entertainment industry.
In his address, Governor Sakaja celebrated the significant strides made by the local music scene, particularly in Nairobi, which has become a hub for talent development and a magnet for global artists. He emphasized how the creative industry has not only boosted the city’s cultural profile but also provided employment opportunities for countless young people.
“As a county, we are committed to recognizing our artists who have shaped Kenya’s cultural heritage. E-Sir was a pioneer whose music continues to inspire generations. One of the roads in South C, where his journey began, will be renamed in his honor,” Sakaja stated.
He further acknowledged E-Sir’s brother, Habib, who performed at the event, keeping the artist’s legacy alive through music.
In an interview with The Sauce back in 2022, musician Nameless revealed that he had started a petition to have a road named after his late Ogopa DJs label mate to commemorate the befallen urban music icon’s artistic talent and honour his memory.
Born Issah Mmari Wangui, E-Sir remains one of Kenya’s most celebrated musicians, renowned for his timeless hits such as Boomba Train and Hamunitishi. His sudden death in a car accident in 2003 cut short a brilliant career, but his music continues to resonate deeply in Kenyan pop culture.
