The Oxford English Dictionary has recently expanded its lexicon to include several Swahili and Sheng terms.
Some of the notable additions in this list seen by The Sauce, includes, the Sheng term Panya route, Kitu kidogo, Rolex, Bantu knots, African massage, Dholuo, East African and more.
The dictionary defines a Panya route as a secret or alternative route, particularly for smuggling.
Another term now featured is Kitu kidogo, which denotes a small bribe or token offered in exchange for a favor.
Additionally, the dictionary has added rolex, a term from Uganda for an omelette and vegetable wrap inside a chapati. The name humorously plays on ‘rolled eggs.’
The Oxford English Dictionary, esteemed for its comprehensive record of the English language’s evolution, previously updated its entries in July 2022 to include terms such as mpango wa kando, chapo, uhuru, githeri, chang’aa, busaa, come-we-stay, buibui, sheng, isukuti, jiko, mandazi, and mabati.
