Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, CEO of Kenya Film Classification Board has released a statement to squash misleading reports that Kenyan group Sauti Sol’s latest music video, “Melanin”, has been banned.
According to the statement, Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has received a deluge of public concerns and complaints on its appropriateness for children, and that the music video had not been submitted for classification,“The video has been released for public exhibition without compliance with the Films and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya.”
Meanwhile, KFCB has warned media houses on Twitter that they must not air the music video during the watershed period. “The Board will not hesitate to take action against any broadcaster or exhibitor who shows the video during the watershed period and/or in establishments where children are at risk of viewing it.”
Netizens have taken to social media to voice their dismay through the hashtag #SautiSolVideoIrksEzekielMutua, many supporting the Kenyan band, and others reiterating the importance of following KFCB protocol.
