Ruto To Hold Meeting With TikTok CEO In The Wake Of Petition To Ban App In Kenya

President William Ruto has let it be known that he is set to hold talks with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew.

Speaking at State House Lodge Nakuru, the president said the meeting would in his quest to have content on the popular platform (as well as its counterparts) moderated such that it is less harmful and geared more towards monetization.

“Tomorrow, I will have a discussion with the CEO of TikTok so that we can agree on modalities of moderating content on the platform. I know we have had issues with TikTok in the recent past, but I promise to resolve the matter,” He said.

His message comes in the wake of a petition seeking TikTok’s ban in Kenya. The petition had alleged that the Chinese video-sharing platform was exposing young people to explicit content.

Not supporting said petition, MP Kimani Ichung’wa had explained: ““The petitioner should come to seek on how to regulate the usage of the app, age group and content uploaded for a certain age to watch, outright banning would be killing careers of many young people who are earning a living through it.”
